Chemical Peel

What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are a means of rejuvenating the skin by removing the keratin layer of dead skin cells and also by stimulating the production of new healthy epidermal cells. This technique stimulates epidermal growth, with collagen stimulation in the underlying dermis, giving a tightening effect and a more even distribution of melanin.

Chemical peels are classified by their depth of penetration.  They are divided into three categories: superficial, medium and deep peels.  The depth to which each specific peel penetrates when applied to the skin affects the clinical outcome.  The deeper the penetration of the peel, the greater the changes achieved. However, the depth of peel also represents the amount of downtime, or ‘healing time’.

Superficial and medium peels tend to be made from alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) such as salicylic acid.  AHAs originate from milk and fruit sugars, the most commonly used are glycolic and lactic acid. These acids penetrate the skin well and have significant scientific research to support their efficacy. TCA peels are classed as deep. A deep chemical peel removes skin cells even deeper but there are more risks associated with them.

Superficial peels are the ‘lightest’ peels and are really the only type of peel that can be used as a ‘lunchtime peel’. as they are so superficial there is rarely any downtime as a result of the treatment. These are similar to a good exfoliation, giving an instant brightening and smoothing of the skin. They are used to treat very fine lines and wrinkles, dull skin and uneven complexions.

Medium peels are suitable for those who have had previous experience with peels or require a deeper treatment. These have a more down time that superficial peels and you can expect to experience to mild discomfort during the procedure and some skin browning/reddening and skin peeling at home. These peels are used to treat sun damaged skin with hyperpigmentation, mild acne scarring, course skin and fine lines and wrinkles.

Deeper Peels are not offered at Face-Time as they’re too many risks associated with them and require more recovery time. A course of light to medium peels are safer and just as effective over time.
